Chakolya or varanfal is Maharashtrian recipe making from toor dal and wheat flour. It’s like pasta and it have several names like varanfal, chakolya, daal dhokli. It’s really very delicious and healthy recipe with lots of proteins.
Chakolya is very Maharashtra‘s local recipe. Chakolya is also known as varanfal. But i definitely recommend whoever wants to test authentic Maharashtrian recipe should definitely try this one too.

If you want you can add cumin seeds during making dough. Do not put more square one time other wise all pieces stick together.
Ingredients
- • 1 cup whole wheat flour
- • 1 cup toor dal
- • For tempering 6 curry leaves, asafetida
- • ½ tbsp mustard seeds
- • 10 garlic cloves
- • 1 tbsp coconut, ½ tbsp cumin seed grind together don't make fine paste
- • 1 tbsp garam masala
- • 1 tbsp red chilly
- • Ghee
- • Oil
- • Salt to test
Instructions
- First make dough with 1 cup of wheat flour add salt to taste and water.
- Now start to cook dal in pressure cooker.
- Take 1 cup of toor dal add 1 tbsp turmeric powder, water and salt.
- After 3 whistles turn of the heat and whisk it with ravi.
- Take 10 garlic cloves, cumin seeds, 1 tbsp coconut paste it with the help of mortar pestle, make rough paste.
- Heat 1-2 tbsp of oil in cooking pot and add mustard seed when mustard seeds start to crack add curry leaves, asafetida and mixture of coconut, cumin seed, garlic cloves.
- Sauté until it becomes golden and add chili powder again sauté.
- Now add daal stir well if you want add water. Then add garam masala and little bit salt(remember we add salt in daal and dough also so first check that).
- Now divide dough in 3-4 portion make ball in medium or big size, roll it make chapati and cut it in square or diamonds shape.
- Add squares one by one after boil amti or daal.
- Keep it on medium heat for 8-9 minutes stir in between to avoid sticking to bottom.
- Serve with ghee and pickle.

For making Chakolya or varanfal we need whole wheat flour, toor dal, for tempering 6 curry leaves, asafetida, mustard seeds, garlic cloves, coconut, cumin seeds grind together don’t make fine paste, garam masala, red chilli, oil, ghee and salt to taste.
First of all make dough for that take 1 cup of wheat flour add salt to taste and also add water in small quantity as we need.
Now we start to cook dal in pressure cooker. Take 1 cup of toor dal, add 1 tbsp turmeric powder, water and also salt to taste. After 3 whistles turn of the heat and whisk it with ravi or whisker.
Take 10 garlic cloves, 1/2 tbsp cumin seeds, 1 tbsp shredded coconut in mortal n pastel and make paste.
Heat 1-2 tbsp of oil in cooking pot and add mustard seeds, when mustard seeds start to crack add curry leaves, asafetida and paste we made earlier (coconut, cumin seed, garlic cloves paste).
Saute until it becomes golden and add chilly powder again saute.
Now add cooked toor dal stir well if you want add water. Then add garam masala and little bit salt. Remember that we add salt in daal and dough also so first check that.
Now divide dough in 3-4 portion make ball in medium or big size, roll it make chapati and cut it in square or diamonds shape.
